Talking Mussels with James Martin

James Martin took his opportunity appearing on This Morning to talk about how the pandemic is affecting the fishing industries. One of James’s fisherman that he relies on for produce recorded a clip for This Morning to talk about how they were being impacted.

Our friend and owner of Westcountry Mussels, Gary says:

"Instead of harvesting them for top restaurants in the UK, we’re having to throw them away and it’s a tragic shame. We have to dump over 300 tonnes because we have no restaurants to supply."

In a bid to combat this loss, James created a recipe using mussels so viewers at home would be encouraged to buy the shellfish and cook them up at home...

Not what it said on the tin!

I purposely ordered Westcountry mussels, having been very pleased with them previously, so I was most disappointed to receive Scottish farmed mussels (which I generally avoid) and not been advised of the substitution. If there was an issue with the order, it would have good to know. The Westcountry ones have more robust shells, so I had a greater number of damaged ones this time, and was also unimpressed with the number that did not open on cooking. I don't think I have had any failures on that score from the Westcountry ones, so they must therefore be much fresher on purchase or kept better in transit. On a positive, the mussels themselves were a good size. I will be sure to check next time that I will getting what I ordered and paid for!

Only could use half

Whilst prepping the mussels I weighed just over 1kg of the mussels to be unusable unfortunately. Lots of cracked, floaters and a few non closing.
The less than 1kg that remained were lovely and not gritty and everyone enjoyed them
